Abstract

An innovative approach to scalable rice fortification

Micronutrient deficiencies affect over two billion people globally, particularly within developing countries. Fortifying staple foods such as rice with essential vitamins and minerals provides a practical and cost-effective way of improving nutritional intake.

This proposal presents an innovative approach to rice fortification, highlighting how the proposed production method offers advantages over conventional fortification in efficiency, accessibility and nutritional value.
Vision

The leading supplier of fortified rice premix in Africa and the Indian Ocean

Contributing to the elimination of iron deficiency anaemia across the region, one blended kernel at a time.

Mission

Affordable, certified nutrition built for existing rice systems

To manufacture high-quality, affordable, and internationally certified iron rice premix that improves public health through food fortification — without disrupting how mills, governments and households already handle rice.

Why rice

The staple that already reaches everyone

Iron deficiency is the world's most common micronutrient deficiency, and its leading cause of anaemia — with children and women the most affected. It reduces cognitive development, school performance, worker productivity, and pregnancy outcomes.

Many countries consume rice as their primary staple food, which makes rice fortification one of the most effective public health interventions available: fortify the grain people already eat every day, and the intervention scales with existing habits rather than against them.

Why Forti-Grain is different

A nutrition-manufacturing platform, not another rice producer

Forti-Grain is not positioned as a conventional rice producer. It is designed as a specialised nutrition-manufacturing and fortification platform that adds micronutrient value to a staple already grown, milled and eaten at scale.

The proposed facility is built for 2 MT of premix per hour — 9,600 MT a year — enough, at a 1:200 blending ratio, to support fortification of up to 1.92 million MT of rice annually across Mauritius, Africa and the Indian Ocean.
